Melville is an affluent coastal hamlet in Long Island with hot sunny summers and cool damp winters. Thought to be named after Herman Melville, Melville is the home of maritime and whaling museums where you can discover the exciting history of Long Island Whaling, shipbuilding, and the whaling industry. Dotted with charming taverns, waterfront bungalows, and colonial homes, Melville is also the host of operations for many Fortune 500 companies. Additionally, the Long Island newspaper Newsday is published in Melville, along with a variety of art galleries, performances, and other cultural community events.
Another interesting thing about Melville is that it is the poet Walt Whitman’s birthplace. In 1819, Walt Whitman was born at a farmhouse in West Hills built by his father around 1810. The Birthplace, now a museum, was restored in 2001 and is a beautiful example of native Long Island craftsmanship. The farmhouse is surrounded by lilac bushes and there are 350 artifacts inside the home. Some of the artifacts include a spinning wheel, Whitman’s writing desk, portraits of Walt, and an Albion printing press, founded by Walt Whitman, used by The Long Islander circa 1830. The History of Walt Whitman Birthplace Association (WWBA) have programs for children and adults such as: Walking with Whitman: Poetry in Performance, Champions of Literacy, Poets-in-Residence, Long Island Poet of the Year, Writers-in-Residence, Student Poetry Contests, and education programs like Secondary Education (Grades 9–12), Create & Explore (Grades 3–8), Explore (Grades 3–8), and See and Touch Interactive (Grades Pre-K–2). The WWBA is a place where writers, educators, students, and tourists can explore, write, and learn in the birthplace of one of the world’s most well-known poets.
